International Court of Justice

President's Website:

Hello advocates and justices,

Welcome to IMUN '18s International Court of Justice. My name is Jude Snober, and I’ll be presiding the court this year. Although my MUN journey began five years ago, it’s almost at its end as I’m currently in my senior year at ABS. I don’t have a favorite forum, but it’s always a pleasure to be in the ICJ; advocates debate two sides of a whole story in front of justices who deliberate privately to declare the verdict by the end of the conference- exactly like a court. There will be interaction with witnesses, a lot of emotional stories, and people taking their role to heart. There will also be times in which you want to scream and rip your hair out, but hopefully they’d be outweighed by the laughter. The fact that you either come out of the court guilty or not guilty, should not hinder your motivation to give it your all. What’s important is that you have a good time constructively debating to solve the crucial topic at hand.

Topic 1:       Bosnia and Herzegovina V Serbia and Montenegro

A lot of cases of ethnic cleansing occur in today’s world, which is the exploitation and expulsion of certain individuals given their religion, and in this case; Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica and Žepa. In Bosnia, the Muslims used to represent the largest single population (1971). The Bosnian Serb forces went through with this in 1995, upon areas that were controlled by the Army of Repubika Srpska. Meanwhile, the Bosnian War (1992-1995) was occurring at the same time, a civil war in which the Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks fought, causing social, humanitarian and economic upheaval. 8,000 Bosniak/Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed, along with 25,000-30,000 Bosniak civilians forced to leave from Bosnia and Herzegovina by the VRS (Army of the Republika Srpska) under Ratko Mladić orders. This caused chaos between the prosecution and defence, but the struggle for control in Bosnia overall.
